about the artist

Chelsea is an artist of mixed European and Anishinaabe descent from Northern Ontario. She grew up in a smalltown where most of her youth was either spent outside or with her nose in a book. She has always been fascinated by the natural world, the process of slowing down and appreciating her surroundings as well as how to live more in harmony with the land.

Since graduating from OCAD University in 2020 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, Drawing and Painting where she focused on creating paintings with materials from the land (such as rocks and soil from her homeplace) she has found herself fully immersed in the process of art making with materials being the main focus. Through this process, she has learned about plants and soil in intimate ways. Learning their names, their stories, and all their quirks and characteristics.

Chelsea is currently in progress of completing a Bachelors of Education with her teachables being Visual Arts and History, she hopes to be able to share the knowledge she has learned over the years with her future students.

artist statement

The notions of my homeplace, family, and my family’s heritage with a core concept of “all my relations” are the driving forces in my work. I focus on having a slow and methodical approach to the process as a means of being mindful and having a strong intent. Through the use of natural materials such as rocks, soil and plants from my homeplace I am rediscovering and strengthening my connections to ancestors and land.

about the business

the humble wolf is a small passion project to share handmade and mindful towards the environment art supplies and materials. the humble wolf name comes from one of the seven grandfather teachings that I hold so very dearly: humility. finding balance within oneself and all living things was and continues to be one of the biggest aspects of my painting practice so it only seemed right to include that in the making of this business. the intention is to share the knowledge I have learned over the years of creating and using handmade paint in my own painting practice as well as to teach the importance of the connection to the land that surrounds us. while dreaming of this business I wanted the connection to nature and the land to be the most important values to show compassion towards all of Creation.
